James Gunn discusses Guardians of the Galaxy 2

guardians-of-the-galaxy-chris-pratt-zoe-saldana-dave-bautista-600x399Marvel Studios loves Guardians of the Galaxy and how well it has performed so far at the box office, in fact they love it so much they already announced a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a week before the first film even hit cinemas.  James Gunn is set to return to write and direct the follow-up, with Gunn admitting he spent the Guardians opening weekend already working on the sequel.

July 28, 2017 is of course a long way off but with every Marvel film being a simple pawn in a grand game of chess the story will need to be airtight to fit in with the rest of the cinematic universe.

Though the film is still being conceived Gunn has already spoken to Empire Online about what we can expect from the sequel, particularly in regards to Quill’s parentage:

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

And while comic fans may scoff at already knowing the canon answer they too may be surprised:

“It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.”

Thanos finally made his first ever in-movie appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, but 10 films in and the poor guy still doesn’t have a single Infinity Stone.  Gunn was rather tight lipped about whether he’d make another outing in the sequel:

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos… I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…”

Sometime soon the Guardians and the Avengers have to cross paths, and they’ll probably do so to take down Thanos, possibly in The Avengers 3 or something, though the timetable for that is not known at the moment. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set for release on July 28, 2017 with The Avengers 3 still being kept secret.

There is an as of yet untitled Marvel movie slated for release on May 3, 2018, so that could possibly the time for a massive team up but for now it’s good to know we have a Guardians 2 to look forward to.
