Game of Thrones is, with good reason, one of the most popular TV shows around right now, quite probably of the last decade or two. Not only are viewing figures wildly high but the fandom surrounding the series is reaching new heights all the time.
The series, if you’ve been living under a rock for years, is based on George R.R. Martin’s epic book series A Song of Ice and Fire. It truly is an incredible series of novels that reach dizzying heights of awesomeness.
The TV series has been living up quite impressively to the bar set by the novels. The production of the series is very impressive and its been wondered many a time what it would look like on the big screen.
Well according to Martin, the prospect of a Game of Thrones movie is not such a far-fetched idea and is actually currently being discussed.
Obviously it’s all in the early stages right now but you can check out his comments in full below…
“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours.”
He went on to say that the possible prequel novellas he wrote for the series could form the basis for the film rather than the end of Song of Ice and Fire. That could prove to be the more logical idea and make it seem less like a cash-cow move.
“They could be the basis for a film. I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.” Stop teasing us with a dozen more stories Martin and share them, I must know what they contain.
As for the series itself it was recently revealed that the shows creators were looking at it as a seven or eight series long adventure, which currently puts the ending in 2017 or 18. So we still have the sword fighting epic with us for some time to come.
It would however, mean that the show ends before the final installment of the book, something that Martin was actually hoping for.
“I’m hopeful that I cannot let them catch up with me. The season that’s about to debut covers the second half of the third book. The third book was so long that it had to be split into two. But there are two more books beyond that, A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons. A Dance With Dragons is itself a book that’s as big as A Storm of Swords. So there’s potentially three more seasons there, between Feast and Dance, if they split into two the way they did with Storms.
Now, Feast and Dance take place simultaneously. So you can’t do Feast and then Dance the way I did. You can combine them and do it chronologically. And it’s my hope that they’ll do it that way and then, long before they catch up with me, I’ll have published The Winds of Winter, which’ll give me another couple years. It might be tight on the last book, A Dream of Spring, as they juggernaut forward.”
It looks like a film, or possibly two, will be the way the studio ends the tale. Regardless though we have season 4 to look forward to in the coming weeks.
